Lahore: The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has announced the initiation of "Project Pakistan" to assist in the development of hockey in the country. FIH President Tayyab Ikram emphasized the urgent need for Pakistan's hockey to regain its former glory, akin to the successful "Project India" launched a few years ago.
Ikram stated, "Pakistan's hockey is essential for both Asian and global hockey. India adopted a similar project and significantly improved its standing in the sport. Now, we are set to launch Project Pakistan in the coming months."
He further revealed that a similar initiative would also be introduced for Africa, highlighting the FIH's commitment to helping Pakistan reclaim its lost status in the hockey world. He stressed the importance of nurturing talent and establishing a high-performance professional framework to achieve this goal.
Currently, Pakistan is facing significant challenges due to financial constraints, which have hindered its ability to compete effectively. Ikram pointed out the necessity for a robust financial model and unwavering commitment from the government to support the sport.
He noted, "In the recent Paris Olympics, twelve countries participated, while an additional eight to ten nations could have joined but lacked the necessary financial backing and government commitment."
"This presents a significant challenge for us. The FIH has previously supported Pakistan on the technical side and will continue to do so in the future. This is not just my personal goal; it is a necessity for Pakistan, Asia, and the global hockey community."
As Project Pakistan unfolds, stakeholders hope it will pave the way for a revitalization of hockey in the nation, fostering new talent and strengthening the sport's infrastructure.
